Theorem: I have a big mouth
Hi!
When I was in 10th Grade my school announced that they were going to slaughter a sheep in the parking lot after school. It would be done according to the strict rules of kosher shechita. Does this help me learn how to respond to my own kids questions about death and dying? You’ll have to read to find out.
My son spent a few hours knocking his head against this wonderful Marilyn Burns problem, the 1-10 Card Investigation.
I’m catching up on Chris Pearce’s charming comics on school life, via John Golden on twitter.
Just a stray thought, there must be an association between neighborhood crime and behavior in schools, right? Both urban crime and school behavior have improved since the 90s.
Reading: I’m revisiting The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and it’s so good. I just finished the second book in N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy and it was also fantastic, I can’t wait to read The Stone Sky.
Music: Cortez the Killer, Neil Young.
Look, I hope you enjoy this little newsletter, but I’m just about done with the Substack revolution. I get too many newsletters and it’s just not working for my reading habits. I’m mass unsubscribing from them all.
Kate Beaton’s Patreon is the best deal on the internet. She just had a kid!
We don’t start school in NYC for about a month. Looking around the internet at people starting up in other parts of the country, I have to say, I am not envious.
Interesting review: No Excuses, Revisited. “She notes that no-excuses charter networks “have begun to reflect on the implications of their rigid behavioral scripts,” but this understates the considerable degree to which charter schools have dialed back their discipline practices.”
All the best,
Michael
